Legislative Year Ends with Strong Finish for Business

On Oct. 13, Gov. Gavin Newsom took his final actions on the 917 bills sent to his desk over the course of the year — actions that, in a large number of instances, aligned with the top priorities of the California Chamber of Commerce.

This edition of Alert includes the final list of major business-focused bills tracked by CalChamber on behalf of its members and the business community at-large.

The list includes some hard-fought wins for California employers. Notably, just one of 29 bills identified as Cost Drivers (Senate Bill 7) passed the Legislature with its most problematic provisions intact. On the final day he could take action, the Governor vetoed the bill, agreeing that it offered an overly broad approach for regulating automated decision systems.

CalChamber coalition letters, as well as the veto and signing messages from the Governor, identified paths to collaborate and negotiate on multiple subjects when the new legislative year begins in January.

Look inside this Alert to see the final status of major business legislation following the Governor’s actions in the month since legislators began their interim recess.
